Principal's Newsletter April 17, 2010

First off: two more incredible Riverdale kids -- DB Coleman and Graham Jonson.

7th Grader DB Coleman placed 5th in Junior Nationals!

Graham Jonson won
Honorable Mention in the Tryon Creek writing contest. Students had to write about how the bobcat's tail got bobbed. There's a ceremony on the 25th where he gets to read his story (and, he hopes, be rewarded).

We could use your help in reminding students about the dress code, especially as things warm up. Quite often, we find that parents of younger students don't think much about things like spaghetti straps, but we need to enforce the policy evenhandedly across the board. I've copied the policy listed in the student-parent handbook below:

According to School Board Policy, "Responsibility for dress and grooming rests primarily with students and their parents. However, the District expects student dress and grooming to meet standards which meet the following conditions:

  • Midriff covered in all positions, i.e., bending, reaching, etc.
  • Tops need to have shoulder straps at least 2” wide
  • No cleavage or undergarments showing in all positions
  • No clothing that depicts sex, drugs, alcohol, graphic violence or innuendos of such
  • Skirts, skorts, shorts, or dress length must be longer than mid-thigh (average could be 4-6 inches above knee)
  • Footwear must be worn at all times appropriate to activity
  • No hats or hoods can be worn indoors and/or in classrooms
  • No pajamas (exception would be Pajama Day)

Fifth Grade Visitors from Harrison Park School

Students from Mary Del Rio's fifth grade class visited our fifth graders on Wednesday, April 7. Both classes read Jane Yolen's novel The Devil's Arithmetic and participated together in literature circles. Mrs. Del Rio's class attends Harrison Park, a K-8 school in SE Portland.
